In July 2021, the Chicago City Council passed an ordinance creating a new model for police oversight, accountability, and public safety. The ordinance established the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability (CCPSA) as a City department comprised of a citywide Community Commission and 22 elected District Councils, one in each police district.The Community Commission has authority to advance systemic reform and strengthen the police accountability system citywide, while District Councils work at the district level to improve policing and public safety in their communities.Together, the Commission and District Councils bring police officers and Chicago residents together to plan and prioritize public safety, give Chicagoans a meaningful role in oversight, and explore and advance effective alternative

District Council is a new elected body focused on issues of policing and public safety. It was created by the Chicago City Council after years of activism to make policing more responsive to community needs. District Councils will give our community a voice in what public safety and policing will look like in our neighborhoods. Chicago’s 17th Police District will be represented by three District Council Members.
